It’s been a snowy old week here in the North of Scotland, and like most of the rest of the country life here has been dominated by all things white. The kids had another two days off school last week and a schoolfriend here to keep them company. They were rather peeved to be going back to normal on Friday – as far as they were concerned it was due to be party central right here all week!
Unfortunately last week wasn’t quite so great for yours truly, and I had the first big flare up this year of the autoimmune symptoms I’ve been suffering now with for quite a while. Flares tend to start with a sore throat, a horrible feeling in my back, stiffness all over and a lot of bone and muscle pain. They are also accompanied by a feeling of extreme tiredness and I’m afraid I spent most of Wednesday and Thursday evenings and all of Saturday afternoon fast asleep in bed!
The above hardly classifies as a Little Love, and to swing it back to things of a more positive nature I do still have some nice things to share. 🙂 So sit back, grab a cuppa and let me tell you about this week’s happy things. Because no matter what else is going on, there are always lots of lovely things in life to savour and enjoy. 🙂
This week I’ve been reading How to Stop Time by Matt Haig, and I’m loving it. It’s a really quirky book about a man who suffers from a rare condition that allows him to age at an incredibly slow rate. His kind – the ‘albas,’ can live for centuries and must keep their secret hidden from society. They must also never fall in love – which I’m guessing by the storyline so far, he’s very likely to actually go ahead and do! This is one of those books I’d seen on lots of peoples’ Insta feeds and I’d say the hype is worth it. It’s already shaping up to be one of my favourite reads of the year so far – grab it from a bookshelf nearby if you can! 🙂
I’m afraid we didn’t manage to watch too many things last week, but we did dip into the start of the second series of Designated Survivor – a show we absolutely loved when its first season aired last year. I was a bit sceptical about how the whole concept would stretch to another series but so far it’s looking promising. If you liked Kiefer Sutherland in 24 I’d say there’s a good chance that you’d enjoy this one aswell. 🙂
As much as possible! Last week was all about piling on the layers and trying to keep warm. I’m sure my dog was wishing he had his jumper on when we got caught in the snowshower below at the weekend. His face here just screams out to me ‘come on, Mum, I’ve had enough!’
Recently I’ve listened to a couple of episodes of a podcast called Good Life Project, and particularly enjoyed an interview from 2017 with Daniel Goleman (The author of bestseller Emotional Intelligence) about the evidence behind the reported benefits of meditation that really struck a chord. I was interested to hear that meditation has actually been shown to lessen the activity of genes associated with inflammation. After listening to this podcast I’m going to put Nadia Narian’s Beginners Meditation DVD on my Mother’s Day list for the boys this year (i.e. just go ahead and order it myself. 😉 )
Does it count if I say I made a photo display for my post on reasons to read for World Book Day last week? I have to admit that bar the domestic basics and my blog stuff this week I’ve struggled to make anything worth talking about at all! I’ll try to do better next week and by that time hope to be feeling a lot brighter.
